This video is an excerpt from a lifelong project of mine titled “Mantra In A”. The premise of the project is that I record one “A” note every day for the rest of my life, and take pictures of exit signs to correspond to each “A”. This is a 55 second excerpt of the piece where each “A” and exit sign lasts for one second. Due to the proliferation of exit signs in our daily existence and psyche, this piece relates to “memory” and “identity” through the generic framing of each exit sign, confusing the audience into thinking that they’ve seen that specific exit sign before.

even within her own family, which is mine. D. is my aunt, a
controversial figure who has been mentally handicapped since long
before I met her. She’s the strange one of the family in whom it took
me until adolescence to discover the diva of the sixties Mexican
experimental cinema. I’ve been filming her ever since hoping to be
able to tell her story that is also part of my story. “Pills” is a
short video represents an exercise of memory, in it I speak about my
aunt’s memory, trapped in nostalgia of her ephemeral glorious past,
but also about my own memory of her, and of the dying medium of
non-digital photography. The two memories are interdependent, and this

The video was made using the technique of video-collage, images and sounds were taken from horror films, recorded directly from TV. The proximity of the camera make images abstract items, revealing the points / pixels / lines of the monitor, a plot indecipherable, where the movie subtitles invade the space, such as words, letters or usualy signs… The piece looks a kind of puzzle unrecognizable.
Throughout the twentieth century television has invaded our collective
memory, assuming as part of our own identity. Over time this memory will be scattered, breaking up into small sketches, becoming a set of single images, which are grouped as in a dream / nightmare. The reflection of that memory becomes an amalgam of sounds and images presented to us with completely unknown time. The TV becomes unknown.

Each person, keeps everything they are and what they have lived in a chest, where our inner self hides, where everything we have lived expresses and converts us in what each person is, this chest is our mind and everything that is kept in it, while remembering, it comes back to us, like when a candle is lit in the dark and every drop of wax of this burning candle, leads us to our identity, to our memories, to our memory. Identity is a fusion of elements, a combination of everything that surrounds us, what we live, what we feel and think, we are a mixture of everything, a mixture like that of the “fanescaâ€. Fanesca is a typical ecuatorian plate, a soup that integrates a wide variety of ingredients, which make it very thick, and gives it a unique taste; it is because of things like this, a soup that reminds us of our childhood, our life, our family memories, our culture, our daily life, and our country. We are what we are, we are beings that one day will blow away their flame, where all memories kept will extinguish and that flame that kept burning, will vanish, and with her, another being will enter the world of darkness where only their memory prevails.
